Conscious sedation – the long and short of anxiety management
Professor Julian Yates, Professor of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Implantology/Consultant Oral Surgeon, University of Manchester

This presentation will provide a brief synopsis of the regulations and standard relating to the provision of conscious sedation. It will also briefly detail the pharmacology of conscious sedation and its application to managing the anxious patient. Patient selection in terms of evaluating patient anxiety, medical suitability and physical assessment will also be discussed. Developments in in terms of new sedation techniques will also be highlighted. 

Learning objectives:

  • To have an appreciation of the regulations relating to conscious sedation.
  • To be able to understand the pharmacology of common sedation agents.
  • Understand how to assess patients for conscious sedation.
  • To have an awareness of the risks around inappropriate patient selection.
  • Have a knowledge of new sedation techniques and their application to current practice.
