Annual General Meeting of Section of Surgery followed by PRESIDENTIAL ADDRESS of Mr J Vincent Smyth, Consultant Vascular Surgeon, (MRI), Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust
“This is not the job I was promised”
- The last 30 years have seen a revolution in the working lives and careers of junior doctors, with the focus variously on the first years of practice, early training and particularly specialist training from Registrar level. These changes, along with the drive for a Consultant led and Consultant delivered frontline have dramatically altered the nature of being a Consultant in the NHS. Like many of you I have seen these changes from the inside and would like to share my views on the good, the bad and the ugly aspects of the changes we have lived through so far, as well as where the future might leave us as Consultants. I hope you will find it interesting and that it will stimulate some desire to control our own destinies, rather than passively accept changes that are not infrequently driven by non-clinical incentives. I hope to see you at the Chancellor’s on October 9th.
