Chronic thromboembolic disease is potentially the only curable form of pulmonary hypertension.  Inspite of definitive therapeutic options, the disease is either misdiagnosed or there is a dely in the diagnosis.  Acute and chronic pulmonary emboli have distinct histopathological and imaging appearances.  Radiologists play a pivotal role in recognising the disease as early and accurate diagnosis is essential to achieving the best outcomes.

Objectives:

  1. Discuss the temporal evolution of thromboembolic disease
  2. Illustrate the use of multimodality imaging in the diagnosis of chronic thromboembolic disease
  3. Go through the new diagnostic algorithm
