The aim of the talk is to consider the important implications of dealing with morbidly obese patients for the anaesthetist. While the focus will be on anaesthesia for bariatric surgery the speaker hopes the same principles will be useful to anaesthetists dealing with morbidly obese patients for general anaesthesia for any surgical speciality. The talk will include elements of preoperative assessment of the obese patient and optimisation before surgery. It will also consider conduct of general anaesthesia including airway management, patient position and transfer, ventilation strategies, drugs and doses and will include practical tips and advice based on available evidence as well as the speakers own experience.
