LIBRARY SERVICES

Access and Membership

To gain access to the John Rylands University Library (JRUL) and take advantage of its services, Fellows of the Society must have a current John Rylands University Library Card.

It is important to bring your Library card on each visits as access will not be permitted without it.

Fellows who do not have a current card should contact a member of staff of the Manchester Medical Society before visiting the Library.

It is also advisable to call the Reception desk, in advance of your visit, to check that services for printing your Library card are available. Staff can advise you of the best times to visit and make special arrangements, if required. Telephone number (0161) 275 3716.

 Resources and Services

Most of the medical books are now housed on Blue 2 and journals are housed on Floor 1 of the Green Area of the JRUL.  All journals are now housed on a single floor, Green 1, and the sequence is called the Clinical Sciences Journals sequence.  Current journals in all disciplines are now to be found with the back issues so again these will be found on Green 1.  A reference collection including research & medical directories, and some printed abstracts & indexes is located on Blue 1.  Material in related scientific or social disciplines are also available to Fellows in other areas of the Library.  Please note that the Medical Librarian always welcomes suggestions for new book purchases.

The JRUL Card enables Fellows to loan up to 50 books, which are subject to recall (for use by another library member) and annual inspection.

You must have your Library card with you to borrow books. Please make staff aware of any changes to your home or email addresses, so we can keep in contact.

Journals are generally reference only.  Self service photocopying facilities and document supply services are available at reasonable cost.  An inter-library loan service is available to Fellows at a reduced cost of £5.

Please note that access to electronic journals and printing is available through the walk-in user service at the Blue 1 Information Desk.  Fellows who are not able to carry out their own searches may ask to have a search carried out on their behalf; a charge of £25 will be made for the Librarian’s time (plus any database costs on occasions when the search requires access to a database the library does not already buy).  Please also note that Electronic Resources licensing restricts access to some products.  For further information about this service please contact the Medical Librarian.

You may access the JRUL catalogue online at www.manchester.ac.uk/library then follow the link to the Library catalogue.  To access your Library Account now requires a 4-digit PIN number.  To receive a PIN number Fellows need to call, in person, to the Reception and Membership desk,
with their Library card, where a PIN number will be issued.  For security reasons PINs cannot be given over the telephone.

Full Members have full library access but no borrowing rights.
