“The Power of Words and Imagination – managing peri-operative anxiety”
Dr Ann Williamson, General Practitioner for 32 years, Accredited member of the British Society of Clinical & Academic Hypnosis, a certified NLP Master Practitioner

  • This talk will focus on ways that the anaesthetic team can minimise peri-operative anxiety by the language that they use to their patients.  Ways to engage their patient’s imagination and focus their attention to help them feel calmer will also be described.  These rapid hypnotic techniques can easily be taught to patients so that they have a lifelong tool they can use for anxiety management.

PRESIDENTIAL ADDRESS of Professor Andrew F Smith, Consultant Anaesthetist, Royal Lancaster Infirmary & Honorary Professor of Clinical Anaesthesia, in the Faculty of Health and Medicine at Lancaster University.
“Special needs?  The perioperative care of people with learning disability and autism”

  • About 1.5 million people in the UK live with a learning disability or autism.  This talk will cover current concepts in these two developmental disorders and advise on the legal and practical aspects of perioperative care for these often poorly handled people.

Further speakers to be confirmed.
