OCTOBER 2005

The first meeting for the Section of Anaesthesia of the Manchester Medical Society for the 2005/2006 session was the Presidential Address. The meeting was held on Thursday 6th October 2005 at 7.00 pm in the Manchester Dental Education Centre (MANDEC), University of Manchester.

Prior to the Presidential Address, the Annual General Meeting took place. Formal election of New Office-bearers and Members of Council for 2005/2006 were unanimously accepted.

Retired member Dr B. Foster asked about the Andrew Hunter fund which traditionally Section Members paid into on an annual basis. Dr McCluskey replied that since the dinners had been replaced by various half day symposia and buffets, and income was generated by the joint RSM meeting, this was being held as a charitable fund mainly for supporting trainees working in the third world.

The incoming President, Dr D. Meadows (Consultant in Anaesthesia & Intensive Care, Stockport Foundation NHS Trust) accepted the Presidential Medal and thanked Dr Ghaly, current Immediate Past President, for all his hard work throughout his presidential year.

After Dr Meadows acknowledged the honour, she gave a lecture entitled: -

"Unnatural Selection"

The talk was based on the recent experiences of the Northwest School of Anaesthesia in the recruitment and selection anaesthetic trainees, and covered some of the background that underlies recruitment and selection methods. It also included a light-hearted review of some of the pitfalls of recruitment and selection.

Dr J Goodhall [Hope Hospital] won the champagne in the raffle.

The customary Presidential Dinner was held after the meeting at Christie Bistro that provided the atmosphere to bring a delightful evening to a pleasant end.

NOVEMBER 2005

A meeting for the Section of Anaesthesia of the Manchester Medical Society was held on Thursday 10th November 2005 at the Education Centre, Royal Bolton Hospital. As with last year, the November meeting was a half-day morning symposium entitled "The problem chest" and commenced at 8.30 am with coffee, croissants and Danish pastries available half-an-hour before the meeting.

Dr D P Meadows, President of the Section sent her apologies and in her absence Dr Ghaly, the Immediate Past President, thanked the audience for attending and introduced the speakers as follows:-

Dr J E Arrowsmith
(Consultant in Cardiothoracic Anaesthesia & Intensive Care, Papworth Hospital NHS Trust)
"The respiratory patient undergoing anaesthesia"

Dr Arrowsmith presented the assessment of patients with chest problems undergoing both general and thoracic surgery. He demonstrated the lack of robust investigation tools in this high risk group and showed how simple scoring systems based on life style gave good results.

Dr S G Brear
(Director & Consultant in Intensive Care, South Manchester University Hospitals NHS Trust)
"When not to use non-invasive ventilation"

Dr Brear talked about the increasing role of CPAP and BiPAP for patients not suitable for conventional ventilation in the ICU, both medical and post-op surgical patients. He predicted this would become an increasingly useful tool.

Dr R Tiruvoipati
(Clinical Research Fellow, University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust)
"ECMO – Past, Present and Future"

Dr Tiruvoipati gave a very comprehensive overview of the past, present and future of ECMO, with reference to the type of patient most suited to respond well to this therapy.

Dr D M Miller
(Senior Lecturer & Honorary Consultant in Anaesthesia, Guy’s Hospital, London)
"The SLIPA airway and the prevention of incidental pulmonary aspiration
in anaesthesia and resuscitation"

Dr Miller developed a supraglottic laryngeal airway, which is disposable and cheap. It seems to offer safety features to prevent aspiration and the delegates were offered samples in various sizes to try in their own practise.

The audience listened attentively and a question and answer session was held after each lecture.

A raffle was held and was won by a Dr Demaine.

After the meeting a light buffet lunch was held and feedback was excellent.

Over 65 delegates attended the symposium and the section gratefully acknowledges the kind support of BBraun.

FEBRUARY 2006

The Trainees’ Prize evening for the Section of Anaesthesia, of the Manchester Medical Society, was held on Thursday 9th February 2006 at 7.00 pm in the Manchester Dental Education Centre (MANDEC), University of Manchester.

Dr D P Meadows, the President of the Section, opened the meeting and welcomed the four competitors as follows:-

Dr S J Washington
"Methaemoglobinaemia – a case of mistaken identity"

Dr O Pratt
"A survey of thiopental use in neuro critical care patients"

Dr S Patel
"Cardiac arrest due to oral potassium overdose "

Dr A Baldam
"Case report of coarctation presenting as peri operative hypertension"

Each speaker was allocated 10 minutes for their presentation with a further 5 minutes for questions. The judges felt that all four papers were of a very high standard and that the scores were very close.

After some debate, it was agreed that the first prize of £250 would be awarded to Dr Oliver Pratt. The runner-up prize of £100 (donated from the section’s funds) was awarded to Dr A Baldam.

The president extended her commiseration to the remaining two presenters but also reinforced that all papers were of excellent quality and that each person would receive a certificate to mark the occasion.

After the meeting an informal Buffet supper was held at MANDEC in honour of the presenters.

MARCH 2006

An afternoon Joint Meeting with the Section of Anaesthesia of the Manchester Medical Society and the Liverpool Society of Anaesthetists was held on Thursday 9th March 2006. The meeting commenced at 2.00 pm, with a buffet lunch beforehand between 1.00 and 1.45 pm. at the Park Royal Hotel, Warrington.

This year’s joint meeting was organised by Manchester Medical Society and chaired by the President, Dr DP Meadows.

The speakers for the afternoon were as follows:-

Dr S Ridley
(Consultant in Anaesthesia and Intensive Care,
Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital NHS Trust)

"Treatment of sepsis in the UK"

Drs R Nelson & P Dark
(Consultant anaesthetist, Countess of Chester NHS Trust &
Consultant Intensivist, Salford Royal Hospitals NHS Trust)

"Debate: This house believes that the pulmonary artery flotation catheter
no longer has a place in the management of critically ill patients"

Dr R Wenstone
(Consultant in Anaesthesia and Intensive Care,
Royal Liverpool & Broadgreen University Hospitals NHS Trust)

"Advances in the management of massive haemorrhage – the role of recombinant Factor VIIa"

Dr J Eddlestone
(Consultant in Anaesthesia and Intensive Care, Central Manchester
& Manchester Children’s University Hospitals NHS Trust)

"Critical Care five years from now"

An impressively large audience of about 150 delegates attended and all of them appeared to stay until the close of the meeting after 5pm. Dr Ridley set the scene by giving an overview of the problem of sepsis and its treatment. He included a particularly interesting account of the cost effectiveness of critical care and expensive drugs such as Xigris. An enjoyable debate followed which was very well argued on both sides. There can only be one winner though and this was Dr Nelson with a convincing majority. After a coffee break, Dr Wenstone gave an interesting account of the use of Factor VIIa to be followed by the valedictory address of Dr Eddlestone who gave us her view of how the provision of critical care services is likely to develop. Each of the talks was followed by a Q&A session which was lively and informed.

This was the second joint half day symposium between the two societies, following the success of last year’s experiment. Again it was an unqualified success.

Dr Meadows, President of the Section of Anaesthesia of the Manchester Medical Society, invited Dr Roberts, President of the Liverpool Society of Anaesthetists) to close the meeting. He thanked Manchester Medical Society for organizing the meeting and proposed a vote of thanks for the speakers.
