Welcome!
Manchester's
first Medical Careers Fair was held on the 17th March 2010. It was a culmination
of several months of careful planning, fuelled by a shared enthusiasm from the
Manchester Medical Society, the
University of Manchester Medical School and the
Manchester Medical Careers Society to
improve the medical student experience at the University of Manchester. Student
Affiliateship of the Society is open to anyone who is currently undertaking a
medical, dental or biomedical degree at the University of Manchester and is
FREE.
An application form can be downloaded here.
Manchester
Medical Careers Fair 2010 had 3 aims:
1. Fresh insight into medical
careers
Teams of representatives from a number of different specialties
engaged in a
series of interactive careers sessions. In every session, delegates
benefitted
from structured specialty-specific careers guidance, as well as extended
informal interaction with the team of representatives. The team included an
eminent consultant, a middle-grade doctor and a junior trainee - all of whom
offered up-to-date information about their specialty as well as personal
reflections.
2. Engagement with Manchester’s finest
Manchester has a fantastic research heritage, and is fortunate to be home to a
number of World-renowned clinicians and research specialists. This Fair actively
encouraged interaction between delegates and invited speakers.
This was a fantastic opportunity for students and junior doctors to learn about the
exciting work taking place throughout the North West. We encouraged students and
junior doctors to seek out opportunities to network. It was a good way of
identifying an SSC or Project Option tutor, and may lead to opportunities to
gain experience in audit or research.
3. Skills development
Thanks to support from The General Medical Council, The North Western Deanery,
The University of Manchester Careers service, and a number of clinicians based
in Greater Manchester, skills sessions took place throughout the day,
covering a wide variety of topics.
