SECTION OF PSYCHIATRY
Symposium "Sex offenders"
Professor D
Grubin - "Medical
treatments of sex offenders"
[Based on
what is known about medical models of sex offending, and the
neurobiology of sexual arousal, the presentation will discuss
rational prescribing for sex offenders.]
Dr C Logan -
"Risk assessment of sex
offenders"
[The evaluation of risk in men and
women whose sexual behaviour is harmful towards others is a
complex undertaking made worse by the consequences of getting it
wrong. Over the last 20 years, a variety of approaches have been
developed to aid risk evaluations in relation to sexual
offending. This presentation will describe the strengths and
weaknesses of each of the main approaches and make
recommendations for best practice in risk assessment with sexual
offenders, and in the risk management planning activity that
must inevitably follow.]
Mr D Middleton -
"What is the risk of escalation
from viewing child abuse images to contact sexual abuse?
Evidence from assessment of Internet Related Sexual Offending"
[The
perception that viewers of indecent images invariably are also
involved in contact sex offences is not strongly supported by
the evidence of conviction studies. However many offenders
convicted for viewing behaviour appear to share similar
psychological characteristics to contact offenders. This paper
will present evidence from UK research on the psychological
characteristics of sexual abusers who use the internet. The
function that internet use takes in sexual offending behaviour
will be explored together with an analysis of studies which
examine crossover to contact sexual offences.] |

SECTION OF PAEDIATRICS
Annual General Meeting Presentations
(Click here for details to enter an abstract for the
presentations)
Presidential
Address by Dr M Eminson-
"Feeling
our
way
forward"
How
will paediatricians and child mental health specialists work
together in future?
[Paediatric liaison services -
paediatricians working with all the disciplines which are part
of CAMH services - have a long and honourable history, with
examples of good practice even though scientific evidence of
effectiveness is sometimes lacking. As services in Manchester
are reconfigured in line with 'Making it Better' so the nature
of those links will need to change. The evidence to underpin
those new structures, alliances and opportunities will be
reviewed and the challenges identified.]
Mr David Gough Memorial Symposium
Professor D F M Thomas -
"Prenatal
diagnosis—has it improved the long term outcome for children
with congenital urinary tract abnormalities”
[Professor Thomas will assess the
impact of prenatal diagnosis, critically evaluate the evidence
relating to long term outcomes and draw on his 25-year
experience as a paediatric urologist with a particular interest
in prenatal diagnosis.]
Mr A P Dickson-
"Management of bladder exstrophy"
[Mr Dickson's talk will describe
the bladder exstrophy spectrum and discuss the management of the
bladder exstrophy complex in the United Kingdom and overseas.]
Dr J H C Evans-
“Helping children who are wet - art or science?”
[Dr Evans will review recent developments
in our understanding of the causes and pathology behind
childhood wetting and review some of the evidence behind the
treatments we so often utilise.]
Catherine Chisholm Lecture by Professor A S Woolf
- "Developmental biology of renal tract malformations:
lessons for Paediatricians"
[Key points to be covered in Professor Woolf's
talk:
About 1000 children in the UK have end-stage
renal failure: the commonest specific causes in this group are
kidney malformations such as Hypoplasia (too few nephrons),
Dysplasia (undifferentiated kidney) or Agenesis (absent
kidneys).
Kidney malformations are often associated with
ureter and/or urinary bladder malformations such as
Vesicoureteric reflux, Duplicated lower tracts and Obstructed
lower tracts
With advances in medical and surgical treatments,
more such children are surviving to adulthood. In addition, it
is probable that a significant subset (perhaps several thousand)
of the 30,000 UK adults with end-stage renal failure were born
with renal tract anomalies which eventually led to severe kidney
failure in adulthood rather than childhood.
Ten years ago, there were less that a handful of
genes known to control renal tract development: in 2007, based
mainly on mutant mouse studies, we know there are at least over
one hundred such genes.
Critically, several of these genes have been
found to be mutated in children born with renal tract
malformations. This provides families with an answer to the
question “Why was our child born with a malformed kidney?”.
Following on from this, there are implications for the ‘next
generation’ because some of these mutations will be transmitted
to offspring. Clearly, genetic counselling must take into
account the possibility that the renal phenotype in offspring
may be more, or less, severe than in the index case.
Also needing consideration is the whether to
screen siblings, parents and other relatives for mutations
and/or structural renal tract anomalies: here, although some
individuals with significant renal disease may be detected,
others who carry the same mutations may have
clinically-insignificant renal involvement.
Certainly, if such actions are to be implemented,
close working relationships between Nephrology and Clinical
Genetics departments are essential.
In future, we will need to:
1. Incorporate emerging research insights into
clinical practice by establishing clinics where affected
children and their families can be assessed by experts in
nephrology, urology and clinical genetics.
2. Study large collections of patients from UK
and beyond for the discovery of further ‘renal tract
malformation genes.
3. Understand how the severity of renal tract
malformations might be determined by interactions not only
within the human genome but in relation to environmental factors
which might modify the ‘fetal milieu’.] |

[Ovarian
carcinomas comprise a heterogeneous group of neoplasms. Each of
the major morphological types has a different underlying
pathogenesis and natural behaviour. In recent years, there have
been significant advances in our understanding of the
pathogenesis of some of the major types of ovarian cancer. This
is discussed along with the proposal that ovarian carcinomas
can, similar to their uterine counterparts, be broadly divided

to maternity unit staff. This lecture will cover the scale of
the problem, the difficulties facing the anaesthetist, and
suggestions as to their management.]
Dr G Cooper CBE -
"CEMACH.....and other stories"
Miss T S Anon -
"Changes ahead in obstetrics - I predict a riot?"
[The
topic will cover the some of the issues facing
obstetricians in the first decade of the 21st century.
There are huge workforce & training
implications arising from changes in NHS structure
& working time legislation. Training is also affected by
the increasing multi-disciplinary
provision of obstetric care. Recruitment into the
specialty is showing a gender & ethnic bias, which has
yet to be addressed. The cohort of
patients themselves is changing; population
demographics have clinical impacts, & society's
expectations of reproductive health &
childbirth affect the way we practise.
Obstetricians are facing a period of uncertainty & disturbance;
it is our responsibility to ensure
that these challenges do not adversely affect the care we provide.]

McKeith "Current conceptions of Lewy Body dementia and
Parkinson's disease dementia"
[Lewy body
disease underlies a variety of clinical presentations, including
Parkinson's disease, dementia with Lewy bodies and primary
autonomic failure. This review will consider how and why Lewy
body disease presents differently in different individuals and
the challenges this poses for clinical assessment, diagnosis and

Professor D
Neary - "Clinical
syndromes of frontotemporal lobar degeneration"
[The syndromes of frontotemporal
dementia, semantic dementia, progressive aphasia and apraxia
will be described and related to the topography, histology
and genetic substrates of the clinical disorders.]
Professor D Mann
- “Recent biological advances in
dementia research”
[Recently,
there have been 2 major advances in the field of
neurodegenerative disease. Firstly, mutations in a new gene,
progranulin, were identified as a cause of inherited
frontotemporal dementia, and secondly, the major disease protein
accumulated in the brains of patients with this disease was
identified as the nuclear transcription factor, TDP-43. Neither
the progranulin gene (nor its transcribed protein), nor TDP-43
had previously been known to play a role in brain function,
either in health or disease. This talk will focus on these new
biological discoveries in frontotemporal dementia, and discuss
their relevance to this disorder, and to the wider fields of
neurodegenerative disease and normal human neurobiology.]
Dr N
Purandare - "Prevention
of dementia: vascular risk factors and cerebral emboli"
[Dementia
affects 24 million people worldwide. Alzheimer’s disease and
vascular dementia are the two most common causes accounting for
up to 80% of all dementias. There is considerable overlap
between these two dementias with common vascular risk factors.
Current evidence to show that control of vascular risk factors,
especially hypertension, can slow cognitive decline and delay
onset of dementia will be discussed, followed by new research on
the contributions of asymptomatic cerebral emboli to both
dementias.] |

SECTION OF
ANAESTHESIA
Out of Town Meeting
Dr A M Severn
-
"Old brains, new problems"
[The
issue of cognitive dysfunction after surgery remains a
challenge. Initial attempts to identify perioperative factors
found that age was a major factor determining its occurrence.
Precisely what it is about apparently well old patients that
renders them vulnerable to the effects of anaesthesia and
surgery remains a mater of conjecture: Dr
Severn intends to examine the
evidence for the effect of the stress response, the effects of
anaesthesia on the aging cholinergic system and the theory,
recently published in New Scientist, that some anaesthetic
agents are directly neurotoxic.] |
