A little bit of
history first....
The year 2009 marks an important
date in the annals of the MANCHESTER MEDICAL SOCIETY, namely its 175th year, for
on 4th September 1834, it was formally founded at a public meeting of the
physicians, surgeons and apothecaries of Manchester, Salford and neighbourhood,
which was specially called for purpose. An equally interesting event occurred a
month later, on Wednesday 1st October 1834, when the first formal meeting of the
new constituted society was held. The earliest records show that before these
dates, no meetings were held for the discussion of purely medical matters by
medical men alone, nor was there any medical library accessible to the members
of the profession generally.
The President of the Manchester
Medical Society, Professor Paul Durrington, MD, FRCP, FRCPath, F Med Sci, FAHA,
invites you to join us celebrating this event on Wednesday 25th March.
